Gratitude and Blessings

Gratitude

Thanksgiving is the time to focus on gratitude. It is a celebration, started over a century ago, when the pilgrims gave blessings for what they had in their new country. Mimicking that celebration we, ideally, gather with family and friends to pay homage for all that we have.

There has been mention, as of late, of gratitude journals and encouragements by some writers to start or maintain one. If you have not experienced this, it is an excellent suggestion, as it is quite surprising how powerful of a tool it is.

Today, I would like to share some of the things that I am most grateful for. The list includes blessings from my past and current situation.

My Gratitude

Above the love I hold for my two, wonderful daughters, and my four awesome grandkids, is the love I have for reconnecting with my Spiritual relationship with God. I feel so blessed that I have a personal relationship that is filled with love, dependability and trust. I am grateful for the spiritual path I am currently following, which led me to this intimate relationship. It fills me with joy to deepen this experience with my meditation practice and retreat work.

When I became a mother, I experienced a fulfillment unlike any other. I knew that there was nothing and no one that could ever break that bond and tear us apart. I was wrong. I learned never to say, “It will never happen to me”. I wish I could say it has been an unending, positive experience, but I became quite ill in my personal life and alienated my daughters. I am so blessed that I have two forgiving children and have been successful in rebuilding my relationship with them. Initially, it was a trying time. They did not trust that the mother who raised them was back and reliable. I understood their skepticism. I am grateful every single day for our relationship and the love we share. I’m also grateful that I have been able to forgive myself and have a better understanding of the dynamics of what occurred.

Friendship has always been important to me and has been a part of my life since I was very young. Not everyone has friends, nor are they capable of making friends easily. I’ve recognized, through the years, that I am a very social person. I have high expectations to have my social needs met. Not good or bad, just a fact I am aware of. So, my circle of friends run from the very old to the most recent ones that I’ve met these past few years in North Carolina. They also include the friendships I’ve made through the Hub pages Community. I am also grateful for the few friendships which offer a deeper connection in my life.

I am blessed

It would be an incomplete list if I did not count the blessings received from the obvious: heath and wealth. Am I in perfect health? No, but I am aware and striving to make positive changes. So, I would include, at this point, the gratitude felt for having the intelligence and motivation to make the changes necessary to become healthier. Some of these changes include an improved dietary regime; a return to a regular exercise program; and a determination to lose the extra weight that I’ve gained these past few years.

My financial goal was laid out at the beginning of the year as a ‘direction’ I was moving toward. Again, the gratitude is extended to having a steady income, having made a choice over two decades ago to move into a stable career, and having the resolve to never say ‘die’. Tenacity has been a characteristic I’ve carried from childhood. It is a razor sharp edge between staying steadfast and being stubborn. As for the goal to become debt free: I stubbornly stay steadfast! It is a mantra that keeps me moving toward that horizon despite all of the unforeseen setbacks, as well as my own personal undoing, such as falling into old habits, like spending before planning.

I am blessed that I have a home to live in. My heart goes out to all of the people who are homeless, or who have been homeless. I know that there is a reason for all things, but sometimes it is beyond comprehension. I’ve taken care of patients who are homeless, more than I can count. I have a dear friend who was homeless for quite some time. I know it can happen to anyone. I know it has nothing to do with worth or being good or bad; smart or stupid. I know the numbers are increasing because of our current economic situation. It is frightening and can feel overwhelming just thinking about it. Therefore, I’m grateful that I do have a place to live.

I’m grateful for my job. People tell me that a nurse will always find work. However, some jobs have lower employment opportunities and many places are putting hiring freezes on their facilities. Therefore, even in the worse of the working conditions one has to think twice about leaving.

I am grateful for:

Louise Hay is an amazing woman and metaphysics teacher. She influenced me back in the ‘80’s when I was attending the (then named) Church of Today, in Warren, Michigan. She offered a workshop about gratitude and could find anything a worthy cause for being thankful for. So, here is a short list of some of the things that one would and would not ordinarily think of:

I’m grateful for my body. This body of mine is an awesome structure. Its heart beats regularly, despite having been broken a time or two; the muscles and bones are strong, despite the pain I feel from old dance strains, which are put to rest with mild over-the-counter medicine and massage; the brain is still sharp, even though my memory seems to be more select; my eyes still see, despite the need for reading glasses; the ears hear very well, to my nephews dismay, when I catch him muttering under his breath; my kidneys function well, as proven through my visits to the bathroom wherever I am; my skin still has a glow, despite the wrinkles that abound; and my hair is full and thick-and any color I want it to be!

I’m grateful for my son-in-laws. They are part of my life, and part of our family.

I’m grateful I am a grandmother. The joy of being a grandparent is indescribable.

I’m grateful for my siblings. Yes, even the ones I don’t speak to. We have a history and that is all part of our story together.

I’m grateful for the animals and plants that nourish my body giving it fuel, energy, and brain power.

I’m grateful for the world of people who are different from me-cultures and colors make up a beautiful tapestry of life.

I’m grateful for my sense of humor. Inherited by both my father, who loved puns and taught me to appreciate limmericks, and my mother, who loved jokes and a good time, I have been known to forget the punch lines of good jokes.

I’m grateful for the traffic on the road-it allows me to practice my cuss words…er, I mean my patience.

It is astounding how subtle the positive support can show up in our lives when we are in sync with best intentions. We live in a remarkable world filled with great opportunity and endless potential. Stop and think of the myriad of ordinary things that make your life easier. Modern technology has created miracles for those who do not live in third world countries. We have much to be grateful for.

Count your blessings; look around at all that you have and think of what you are thankful for.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

Hi Denise, this is one of the most beautiful and honest hubs about gratefullness I have ever read so far. I'm so happy that everything turned out okay for you. The power of positive thinking is amazing to say the least. I think that if you could get hold of the dvd "The Secret" or the book it would help even more. I watch it as often as I can. I strongly recommend it.

Denise, You are one of the people I am grateful to have in my life. You have taught me a lot over the years about gratitude, accepting gifts and other spiritual lessons you've learned and passed along to me.

Thanks for sharing your hub.

Thanks for reading and commenting. I've added a video about gratitude from one of the 'wise men' that I've learned from. Take a peek at it. It has a nice guided meditation.

Carrie-although I have not read the book, my oldest daughter has and attests to its remarkable outcomes. Thanks for your comments.

Danette, Thanks. And, it is reciprocated. The lessons keep coming and we learn from each other. :)

Dj-aww, thanks. I'm glad you were touched.

Hi Denise, I was very pleasantly surprised by this hub, it was a beautiful read, and very inspiring. I loved every minute of it, and was happy to hear of your experiences and how you stayed and stay positive! Sharing one's experiences I feel is the best teacher...

So I am very grateful for this upbeat hub on the eve of Thanksgiving, which is a day I usually feel cynical about.

Thanks Denise! And God bless!

Denise, I wish like you, all of us can learn to count our blessings..Not a day goes by when I do not thank my God for all the people in my life.., the attitude of gratitude is what makes life wholesome.

Actually it takes humility to be thankful... to be able to look at what you have and say thanks with a grateful heart.

Thank you Denise for who you are and sharing your thoughts.. I am glad to know you.

A great reminder to us all that we need to practise the art of being grateful rather than look at the deficiencies in our lives and to moan at our lot.

There are so many things that we can be grateful for like our relationships with family and friends, having a roof over our heads and good health, the list is endless if we really make an effort to focus on the good things that we are blessed to have in our lives.

Thanks Denise for sharing these beautiful thoughts of gratitude, and keep spreading the word!

@Carolina-Yes, ALMOST everything...grateful for what I have, listening to my heart for what else is needed in my life. :) Happy Turkey Day back to you--do you do the deep fried bird, or the oven roasted? My brother has done both in the past. I prefer the oven bird.

Hi Sofs-thank you for your thoughts. I'm glad to know you as well. :)

@AnnieRose-thanks for reading the hub. I appreciate your kind words.

@Rich-You're welcome! I will. Hopefully, we all will. I think you are right-sometimes it seems to be a habit of our society to name what is wrong and put the blame on someone.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration.

What a sweet comment, Guy. Thank you. I am a firm believer in synchronicity. I know nothing is by accident and it is all a part of the Divine unfolding. I once belonged to a Unity church in Warren, Michigan. I was first introduced to the metaphysical concepts through The Church of Today. I know longer follow the Unity church, however, my spirituality is my primary focus-the continued development of my soul. I attend retreat in Michigan several times a year with the same grp of people. We support each other in the deeper truths of our Being. It is a beautiful life when we 'see' with clarity what is Truth. Thank you for your comments and taking the time to read the hub. Thank you Mrs. Denise for this nice Hub.

For a while, I thought that I read your hub before I wrote mine -Privileges God has been giving us (Characteristics of privileges) - but then I recognized that God gives all the human being & he who thinks a little will know how much he has received from God.

I know there were difficulties you faced through your life, and sorry to say that we will face more in future.

These difficulties are hints from God to tell us & let us make sure that It's God's blessings which save us, not our knowledge or experience.

Thank you my God that although I live in one of the third world countries, I am able to read this article although English is not my mother tongue.

Thank you again

Hi Denise!

Thank you for reminding us to be grateful for what we have, and it could be the simplest things in life-children, grandchildren, siblings (yes, even the ones whom we do not ncessarilly get along with), our heart (a muschle which pumps blood in our bodies to keep us alive) and so forth. Many times, these things are overlooked by people. We get too busy or involved with life, and we do not stop to let them know how grateful we are for them. We only have "one life," and this is the only time we can let them know that they are important in our lives. So, we have to make it count. We hope that someday, we will see them eternally rejoicing with our Creator. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful hub. Looking forward to reading your other hubs. Keep at it. God bless!

Writing a hub to express gratitude in this way must have had a profound and very positive effect on you. If more people took the time to say thank you like this the world would be filled with happier people who could enjoy the game of life. Gratitude is something I deliberately practice everyday until it becomes something I do naturally and spontaneously without having to think about it. I have begun to do the same with forgiveness. Thank you Denise for an inspiring read.

Denise Handlon profile image

Denise Handlon Hub Author 11 months ago

Spirit Whisperer-it truly is a 'game of life' isn't it. It is amazing to me that more people are not grateful for all that is--not just all that they have.

My spiritual path focuses on various aspects of living. Currently, the focus is forgiveness. It is a complex subject and one that allows many opportunities of inquiry into the heart. Life offers many opportunities to practice forgiveness, doesn't it?

Thanks for your feedback. Much appreciated.

Denise Handlon: Gratitude and forgiveness are two of my favorite perspectives, and I love it when they are balanced and intertwined in my life. I hear about the commercialism of Thanksgiving and of how it's been relegated to the sidelines in the hot pursuit of Black Friday. I am grateful that Thanksgiving has remained a precious expression of thanks for me throughout my life, and it doesn't hurt that the traditional fixin's, or variations thereof, are my favorite holiday meal. I strive every day for gratitude and forgiveness, for they are closely connected, blend well together, and enhance life.

Thank you for reading and commenting, baygirl-I'm glad that it was helpful in some way. It is important and easy to forget all the blessings in our lives when we are grieving.

I don't have the space in one hub to count my blessings. I gained a very clear perspective on life when I almost died from my addiction so there is no day that passes by that isn't treated like the best gift ever. Great hub, well worth reading.

It is a pleasure getting to know you.

Hi Bill-I understand. Being brought back from the dead would certainly warrant a daily gratitude. Funny how some people 'get it' and others really don't despite the near tragedies.

Thanks for commenting. Yes, I'm glad our paths have crossed.

Denise, it's hard to explain...I did not fear dying; I just found that I wanted to live more than I wanted to die. It was a matter of weighing both and making a decision. There is a tenacity inside of me as there is in you that would not allow me to give up. I am so grateful for both of us hanging in there. :)

Thanks for your feedback, bill-I appreciate it. Funny you should use that word...it's a word my father first described me with when I was around 9. I had not heard that word prior to that, but it became part of the fabric of who I am today. :)
